Berry Season Begins

More rain - what a blessing! We had an all-night rainstorm without the usual thunder and lightning. It was so pleasant to sleep with the sound of rain in the background.

I picked nearly three quarts of blackberries yesterday. This is just the beginning of the "crop" and only from one of the three thickets out in the hayfield. We rarely pick from the third thicket as it is farther away and surrounded on two sides by high, thick brush and on a third side by a tangle of trees.

My mind's eye is seeing pints of blackberry lemonade concentrate, half-pints of blackberry jelly, and jars of sweetened berries for later use. Dessert last night was fresh blackberries with sugar. Yum!
