I am always on the lookout for things I can make at home instead of buying them at the store. In the summertime I make jelly and jam, and try to keep several boxes of pectin on hand so I will have it when needed. Sometimes it is hard to find at the store when I want it.
In the past I've saved apple cores and peels and made jelly from them. I didn't add pectin because apples are full of natural pectin. The jelly was set just the way I like it: not too firm and not too soft, it was "just right" as Goldilocks would say.
This year, if I can get enough apples, I hope to make and can my own pectin for use later. Find out how to make pectin at Wildflowers and Weeds. It'll be another skill in my personal catalog, as well as a product on my shelves.
