My resurrection lilies finally bloomed!
I was afraid they wouldn't this year, they were so much later than everyone else's.
Last year there were 5 stalks, but the dogs rolled on them and broke them before they bloomed. This year there were 3 spikes, but one was broken off early. The other two bloomed, but this morning only one had flowers. I'm not sure what happened to the others, if they were knocked off or if they were past their prime and just fell off, but they laid sadly on the dewy ground when I went outside.
You can see my hand in one of the pictures. It was windy, so I held the stem to keep it still for the photo.
Although these have several common names such as pink ladies and surprise lilies, I love "resurrection lilies". In the spring the plants are lush and green among my white iris plants. In the summer the leaves completely disappear, and then - surprise - the flower stalks come forth from the dead earth and bloom in all their splendor. What a beautiful reminder of the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.
