According to Fox Online, this week's full moon is a "blue moon". The article says that
"When four blue moons occur in a season, the third one is considered a blue moon. Because most seasons only bring three full moons, this rarity is celebrated. The fourth full moon of autumn will occur on December 21."The article also states that "the last seasonal blue moon occurred in May of 2008. The next two seasonal blue moons will occur on August 21, 2013 and May 21, 2016."
Eons ago when our older girls were around 5 and 6 years old, we lived in Iceland, and the girls collected little Schleich Smurf figurines, imported to Iceland from Germany. The Smurf TV cartoon series was popular in the US, and my mother-in-law videotaped the shows and even shipped us a box of Smurf breakfast cereal that turned the milk blue.
(Interestingly enough, I recently saw the same Smurf figures in a Toys R Us store in the City. Our youngest daughter told me that a Smurf movie is now in the making.)
What does that have to do with this post? Well, I remember that Smurfette, the only female character in the cartoons, cared for a baby Smurf. The baby was not hers though; Smurf babies come to life only "once in a blue moon", literally. I had the silliest thought this week that somewhere in the world there's a new baby Smurf living in a little mushroom village.
