DIY: Shower Cleaner

In my quest to use friendlier, gentler cleaners, I came across a "recipe" for a tub and shower cleaner that sounded easy and promised great results.

Our glass shower door was pretty grimy with soapscum. I have tried just about every cleaner on the market that promises easy, fast results, but none have delivered on their claims. Since I already had the makings for this, I decided to give it a try.

The directions are on the internet in several places, so I don't know who should get the credit, I only know it isn't me. I'm simply giving you my experiences.

I gathered the two ingredients: white vinegar and Dawn dishwashing liquid (the original blue stuff).

This was the only spray bottle I had in the house that wasn't already full of something. I use this bottle to spray water on clothes to be ironed. While it's good for that, it's not good for this kind of work which requires lots of spraying and is quite hard on your hands. Trust me, go buy a trigger spray bottle.

I decided to make 1 cup of the solution since it's an experiment and if it didn't work, I hated to waste stuff. The directions say to use one part white vinegar and one part Dawn, so I used half a cup of each.

I put the vinegar in a glass measuring cup and warmed it in the microwave for 45 seconds, then let it cool slightly and poured into the spray bottle with a funnel. Next I added the Dawn, capped it, and shook slightly to mix. I sprayed the shower door really well, and then let it set for an hour or so. I cleaned the microwave while I waited because I always heat vinegar in it before I clean it.

And finally I used a scrubby sponge to wash the shower door, and wow, does this stuff work! I did have to respray near the bottom and scrub again, but it was easy, no hard scrubbing at all. I rinsed it off and admired my work, then cleaned the rest of the shower.

It did make me sneeze while I was working, but it wasn't like those commercial cleaners that are so strong they drive you out of the bathroom when you spray them. It works great, and I definitely recommend it.

Tub & Shower Cleaner

Use equal parts of white vinegar and blue Dawn dishwashing liquid. Warm the vinegar in the microwave, let cool slightly and pour into your spray bottle, add the Dawn liquid, put the top on and shake slightly to mix. Spray on the tub or shower, let set for an hour or so, then scrub and rinse.

Hi, Kathi. I found the "recipe" on another blog several months ago and tried it. Wow! Our 20 plus year old shower now shines! The recipe I found said that you are to spray it on and leave it.
The next shower provides the rinse. That is what I have been doing for about 4 months and the results were immediate. Wonderful stuff.

I want to thank you for all the work you put into your blog. I check in with you almost daily and enjoy your faith and the information you share with us, your readers. THANK YOU. Marilyn in SW Missouri

  3. Thank YOU, Marilyn.

So I don't even have to scrub at all? That's even better!
