Friday Follow-Up

This week:

I went outside one morning to find all but one of the horses in the hayfield. They'd bent over a fence panel and simply walked over. It took about half an hour to convince them all to come back in the pasture where the grass is much shorter (the grass really was greener on the other side that day). It's nearly time to let them into the hayfield to graze for the winter, but I have to pick up all the osage oranges that have fallen to the ground first.

Mama Duck has begun laying eggs again. I want to get the incubator set up and tested, since it's been a few years since we've used it. She's had two chances to hatch eggs and had a very low success rate. The eggs are fertile - most of the past eggs have had embryos that died at some point.

The cooler mornings have sent the goats into heat, and the buck is smelly.

Our apples are ripe so this week I began canning apples. We've also had baked apple slices and baked apples. I save all the peels and cores to make juice for jelly and vinegar.

I took some tomato cuttings to root on the kitchen windowsill. It's much earlier than I've done it in previous years, but if these die right away I still have time to cut some more.

My Friday Find:

How to make a rocket stove - there are directions to make a rocket stove from cinder blocks, plus a video showing another cinder block stove. The video is near the bottom of the page.
