Friday Follow-Up

This week:

I spent a couple of days down with the flu, but I'm thankful for the little amber bottle of elderberry liquid extract that I keep in my refrigerator. That is powerful stuff! I don't get a flu shot, and I rarely get the flu, but I keep this on hand just in case. As soon as I realized it was flu I started taking a dropperful of the extract 3-4 times a day - that meant two doses on the first day and then four the second day. By that time I felt fine, and really those last two doses were just in case because I was already feeling pretty good.

I watched one of our resident pileated woodpeckers attack an oak tree one morning. I hear them often, tapping away out in the woods and "laughing" (although it sounds more like shrieking to me), but I only see them occasionally and usually not up close. I've only seen the pair together once.

If you're old enough to remember the cartoon character Woody Woodpecker, you might know that he was a pileated woodpecker.

We've had an egg-laying explosion this week. We went from three eggs to four, five and once even six eggs in a day. They're all little eggs still, but I know they'll be large eggs soon enough. We had eggs and sausage one night for dinner: eggs from our hens and sausage from our hogs.
