A wise person once told me that when we lay awake at night, God wants us to pray. I took it to heart and made it a habit. Sometimes He wakes me up to pray for a specific person or circumstance, but lately I've been awake for a good portion of the night. I pray that my sleep will be sufficient for my day.

Last night I went through my entire prayer list, then thanked Him for as many of my blessings as I could put into words, and then started over again since I was still awake.

At one point I became aware of the beating of my own heart. I could hear my blood whooshing through the tiny veins in my ear, pressed against the pillow. I imagined my heart, about the size of my fist, beating steadily, and thanked the Lord for it. Do you know we are just one heartbeat away from meeting Him?

For You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well. (Psalm 139:13,14)

  1. Praying is what I try to do also when I cannot sleep. Great verse and great post.

  2. I love this post!
