Friday Follow-Up

In the last two weeks:

-- Picked 7 quarts of blackberries and an uncounted number of tomatoes.

-- Canned blackberry lemonade, blackberry jelly, and blackberries in light syrup. I still have 2 quarts to "do something" with. I wasn't thrilled with last year's blackberry jelly - it was cloyingly sweet - and wavered about making any this year, however this time I used the recipe for black raspberry jelly instead of the raspberry/lingonberry/etc recipe that I used last year. This one used less sugar as well as 1/4 cup of lemon juice. I'm very happy with the results.

-- My goal this week was to add one gallon of water per person to my "stash", a total of 4 gallons. I managed 4 two-liter bottles, one gallon jug, and 2 quart bottles, approximately 3.5 gallons. (A liter is a little more than a quart, according to my memories of "Schoolhouse Rock"; I'm counting them as quarts here.) A little short of my goal, but better than adding no water. We don't drink soda in two-liter bottles, which would be the easiest way to obtain the bottles needed for water storage.

-- I had a marathon measuring session. I wrote awhile ago about making seasoning mixes ahead. I spent an afternoon making taco seasoning mix and chili seasoning mix, and stored them in empty spice jars. If I'd had more jars I would have made some Sticky Chicken mix too, but I did have one on the shelf from the last session. I save all my empty spice jars for this purpose.

Happy Birthday, July!
