Kidding Monitor

Yesterday I was bemoaning the fact that I've been looking for a used baby monitor for a year to use during kidding season, with no luck. I've haunted thrift stores, craigslist, freecycle, and resale shops, not wanting to spend full price. I've checked the online reviews of the less-expensive new models in our local big-box store, but the range seems to be a problem even from one end of a house to the other.

Dh asked if I knew where our set of rechargeable walkie-talkies were. He suggested I charge them up, and tape the "talk" key down for the unit that goes in the barn. We know they have a range of at least one mile, but that range will be reduced because the barn is metal. In fact, I wondered if it would work through the metal barn, but that would be a problem with a baby monitor too. I tried it out yesterday and hubby could hear me in the house. Of course, that's talking, not goat noises.

I know the battery life will be reduced because the unit in the barn will be "sending" constantly, so I will have to test that as well. Both units are charging right now and I'll be testing it tonight. Hopefully this will work. Kidding could begin as early as Wednesday. It would be nice not to have to make hourly or two-hourly treks to the barn in the dark of the night.

  1. I have for our baby swing changed over from battery power to plug in via the use of an old power supply to a computer gadget and then a couple diodes to get to exactly the right voltage.

  2. I was going to do this for my goat too! If your walkie-talkie idea doesn't work - try baby consignment shops like Once Upon a Child (that's what we have here anyway - not sure what's out west). Digital baby monitors work better in barns if you can find one. I paid $50 for mine brand new and it has a 2,000 ft. range (again less under a metal roof), but we use ours for the human kids mainly ;}. You can find ones for like $30 at Wal-Mart with a shorter range.
