Friday Follow-Up

This week:

-- We ran out of chili seasoning, so I refilled all the little jars with my homemade mix.
Chili Seasoning
Add to one batch of chili

1/8 tsp cayenne pepper
1/4 tsp paprika
1 1/4 tsp chili powder
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp garlic salt
1/4 tsp onion powder
1/8 tsp garlic powder
1/4 tsp oregano
pinch of cumin
1 Tbsp cornmeal or flour
-- I opened the last jar of apple jelly from 2009 (in 2010 I made applesauce and apple pie filling from the apple crop). Time to make more!

-- I need to clean out the freezer before Chuck's appointment at the butcher. Right now it holds a lot of "stuff" - gallon-size bags of apple peels and cores, more bags of pear peels and cores, bags of blackberries - and that's just some of the fruit! I've been steadily turning the peels and cores into juice to make jelly, and have finished up the apples and pears. Next, the bags of blackberries will also become juice, and combined with the strawberries and raspberries (both from the grocery store) to make triple berry jam, which is my favorite. All of the leftover, pressed-dry fruit is making the chickens smile.
