Pantry Preparation

I love stocking up, making up mixes to store on my pantry shelves. Of course I eventually run out of the mixes I've made, so I take an afternoon to make more and restock.

Over the weekend I prepared 6 bread machine mixes (3 Honey Oat and 3 Italian Herb), and 6 chili seasoning mix jars. I usually make more jars of chili seasoning at a time, but I was low on cayenne pepper. I save all the empty herb jars to hold my seasoning mixes.

My seventh grade home ec teacher taught us to gather all the ingredients for the recipe before beginning. You'll know you have all of the items before you start, which saves those "oh no, I'm out of eggs" moments. As you add ingredients to the bowl, put the item away. If you have anything left on the counter when you're finished, you know you forgot to add it!

So, I gathered all the ingredients for the chili mix, my measuring spoons, the recipe, and the six jars I would fill.

You can either add each ingredient to the first jar, then start over on the second jar, or you can do what I do: add the chili powder to all six jars, then add the salt to all six jars, et cetera.

Chili Seasoning
Add to one batch of chili

1/8 tsp cayenne pepper
1/4 tsp paprika
1 1/4 tsp chili powder
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp garlic salt
1/4 tsp onion powder
1/8 tsp garlic powder
1/4 tsp oregano
pinch of cumin
1 Tbsp cornmeal or flour

Now I'm set for the next six batches of chili. Hopefully I'll remember to buy cayenne pepper before the next time I run out of chili seasoning.
