Friday Follow-Up

This week:

-- I took two of the buck goat kids back to the vet for some touch-up work on their horns. I caught the two kids and put them in the crate in the back of the pickup. They bawled and screamed and shouted, and it really upset Cracker, our outside dog. So much so, that as I drove out of the driveway and down the road, with the kids screaming in the back of the truck, Cracker chased me. I rounded a bend and waited for a couple of minutes but did not see him, so I drove on, slower than my usual pace, and I stopped about 3/4 of a mile from home to fix the not-shut-all-the-way passenger door. As I got out of the driver's seat, I saw Cracker come around the corner and run toward me down the road, ears flopping and tongue lolling out of his mouth. He was tired out but he was giving it all he had.

I waited for him, opened the back door and shoved/lifted him in. What else could I do? Taking him home would have been pointless - no fence will hold him, and he would have just followed me again - so he went to the vet's office with me. He drooled all over the back seat, jumped into the front seat when I went in the office to check in, and drooled all over the front seat - and me - on the way home. I spent the next half hour cleaning the inside of the truck.

-- The snow has melted - most of it, anyway. The horses are back out in the hayfield grazing. The water troughs and buckets and hoses have thawed. The animals are happy, I am happy. What a winter this has been! We are expecting a lovely weekend and might even hit the 70's next week. I hope that's the last of the snow.
