A Slice of My Life

Ziva kidded on Saturday. I'd been keeping an eye
on her over the past week when she'd starting showing signs of progress. Her tailhead was finally beginning to loosen a bit, and on Saturday morning it was a bit looser but not nearly so loose that I thought kidding was imminent.

I bought her in September so although she is five years old, this was her first kidding for me. It helps to have experience with a doe so you know what to expect, but Ziva and I didn't have that experience yet. I was surprised when I went out to feed and heard a little baby maa-a-a-a.

She had a single big buckling. He was standing up, dry, and wanted to nurse when I touched him. This is the first time Ziva has raised a kid - her former owner bottle-fed all the kids - so I worried that she might not allow a kid to nurse. She was attentive, talked to him constantly, and hurried back and forth from kid to hay feeder. I put her on the milkstand and milked out some colostrum for a bottle, so I'd know he'd had a good start. I went in the house to prepare the bottle, and when I came back outside he was nursing well. No more worrying about that!

Kidding season is now over. Our total count from four does is 7 kids: 3 does and 4 bucks. This is the E year, so his name is Ezekiel. He'll probably be my only 2014 kid; the others were born in December. I definitely prefer spring kids to winter kids.
