Friday Follow-Up

This week:

-- We had our first salad of homegrown lettuce. Between the late planting and something nibbling on the plants, not much of the lettuce grew, and what's left looks like
it's going to start bolting so we'll be finishing it up as soon as we can. We liked the colorful mix of green and red lettuce varieties in this packet. It makes a pretty salad and tastes good too. I've never planted a fall garden before but I plan to try it this year.

-- My first-ever lavender plant is budding in the herb garden, the marigolds have flowers, and my rosebush is still blooming. It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood.

-- I have officially given up on the carrot seeds I planted a month ago. I planted them as shallow as directed, but not a single one sprouted. Too much rain, perhaps?

-- It has rained every day this week but one. On one of those days we had over three inches, and we've received nearly eight inches in the past thirty days. We are making up for the lack of rain earlier this year, but it might have been better to get it over time instead of all at once. Still, rain is rain, and I will not complain about it. I'm thrilled we've had so much.

“There are three things that are never satisfied,
    four that never say, ‘Enough!’:
the grave, the barren womb,
land, which is never satisfied with water,
and fire, which never says, ‘Enough!’
Proverbs 30:15,16 (NIV)

  1. Do you have fire ants? I discovered, the hard way, that they work under ground to carry away my seeds and my potatoes. I thought my container garden would be safe, but not so. Keep trying!

We DO have ants, Nell, lots of them. That would explain a few things! Thank you.
