12th Blog Birthday - and a giveaway (ENDED)

A chicken giveaway to celebrate Oak Hill Homestead's 12th birthday

Happy blog birthday! Wheeeee!

The official date of Oak Hill Homestead blog's 12th birthday is Sunday, but I'm celebrating all week. Life deserves to be celebrated, don't you think? Whether it's a big milestone or a small victory, I believe in marking the occasion and thanking the Lord for it. Keep reading for a fun celebration giveaway...

Chickens were my "gateway livestock" and the beginning of my homesteading journey. My grandmother had chickens from the time I was small, and it was my job when I visited to feed the bantams and search out their nests way up in the hayloft. Sometimes those hens and roosters were on the Sunday dinner table as well; I knew at an early age where food came from.

So it wasn't a surprise that I had a small flock of chickens before we even moved to Oak Hill. Then came the goats... and the horses... and all the other critters that have inhabited our barnyard and pasture.

When I made dinner last night I opened a kitchen cupboard door and smiled at the 3 fragile eggshells in a bowl on the shelf. These shells were the very first eggs my hens laid. One brown egg was from my first flock of buff Orpingtons, the green egg is from one of my children's Americauna pullets, and the smallest was the first egg laid by my current flock, an almost-white egg from one of the speckled Sussex girls.  Each time we had a "first egg" I blew out the insides and saved the eggshell.

The oldest egg was laid fourteen years ago. Over the years they've changed color and dried out, but I can't yet bear to toss them out. Someday I suppose I will. For now they're a fun reminder every time I open the cupboard door of a milestone on our homestead.

It's Oak Hill Homestead's blog birthday! Come celebrate with this fun giveaway!

Today I'm holding a giveaway to celebrate my blog's 12th birthday and I'd love to have you enter. The prize is a collection of several chicken items including books, metal signs, playing cards, and more. (Please note: The books have been gently-read, the other items are new. No blown-out eggs or live chickens will be included in the prize.)

Click here to enter our second giveaway.

I'll mail this collection of all-things-chicken directly to the lucky winner. You don't have to have chickens to enter.

Use the Giveaway Tool below to enter. Entries open at 5:00 am Central Time on Monday, May 7th, 2018, and will close on Tuesday, May 15th at 11:00 pm Central Time. Giveaway is open to US residents only (sorry... the cost of postage.) A random winner will be chosen by the Giveaway Tool widget and will be notified by email. Winner will have 48 hours to respond; if there is no response an alternate winner will be chosen. I don't want to have to do that, so please watch your inbox!
