Epic Eggs: A Book Review

Review: Epic Eggs, the poultry enthusiast's complete and essential guide to the most perfect food.

Each morning, rain or shine, winter or summer, I walk to the chicken coop with a bucket of feed and a jug of water. Diddle, the barn cat, walks with me but waits politely outside the door, rolling in the sandy dirt and hoping I'll scratch his belly before I open the door.

My son-in-law replaced the chicken coop door for me a couple of Thanksgivings ago, and I silently thank him every time I open it. The old worn-out, cobbled-together door I'd been using is now solid wood, stout and secure. I can hear the hens clucking in anticipation on the other side of it, and the old rooster usually gives a long, drawn out crow as he waits.

Inside, the girls are under my feet, waiting for their treat of a handful of scratch feed before I open their pop door to the run. I empty the bucket into the feeder and the jug into the five-gallon waterer, and then turn my attention to the nest boxes.

The favored nest holds half a dozen eggs in varying shades of brown amid the soft hay. (Hens like to share their nest; I've supplied six cubbyholes but they lay in one, maybe two of them.) The eggs are still warm from a hen that jumped out of the nest when she heard her breakfast coming. I tell you, there is nothing "cooler" than holding a warm egg in the morning. The shell is hard and yet its matte texture is almost velvety. This is something basic and primal, and I hold it in my hand. "We feed the chicken, and the chicken feeds us," writes Jennifer Sartell, the author of Epic Eggs.

Jennifer has written "the poultry enthusiast's complete and essential guide to the most perfect food," says the book cover. It contains the most in-depth information I've ever read about eggs: the anatomy of eggs, how they are formed, and even how they are colored: white or brown, and even cream, pink, blue and green. Eggs are more than just shell, white and yolk; after reading Epic Eggs you'll know all the egg's secrets.

Not just about eggs, Jennifer also writes about the art of raising the chickens that lay our eggs. How to obtain your chickens, the special needs of chicks, and how to make a food and watering plan are all covered. She also compares other types of poultry that people raise for eggs, includes a chapter on troubleshooting "odd" eggs, and discusses chicken breeding and incubating eggs. And of course, no book on eggs would be complete without a section on how to use them. But not just recipes, these are the basic instructions and tips your mother would have taught you about cooking eggs if she'd known them.

Epic Eggs is a welcome addition to my own collection of chicken care books and will be invaluable on your bookshelf too. It's much more than "just another chicken book."

  2. I've been sitting on the chicken fence for a while. Mainly from ignorance of "how" to care for chickens. This would be a great resource for me! Thanks for the opportunity to win a copy!
