Homestead Gift Guide, updated for 2020
A homestead woman is probably a gardener, a homemaker and food preserver, and she might have chickens or goats or even a milk cow. These occupations all need equipment, and equipment wears out after time. Why not take a look around the homestead and see what needs to be replaced?
And of course she'll have hobbies and passions and wishes of her own too. The best gift is always one that speaks to the recipient's heart and soul.
But if you need more ideas and suggestions, this gift guide might be helpful. And if you are the homestead woman in question, feel free to pass this on to your favorite gift-giver!

Buckets, feed dishes and other "daily necessities"

Never underestimate the gift of new mundane items. Many frugal folks put off buying new everyday items for themselves.
New buckets and feed pans are always a welcome item on the homestead. I use black rubber feed pans for more than just feeding my goats. Larger pans hold water for my Muscovy ducks to play in.
The super large ones work well as containers for vegetable plants (drill a few holes around the bottom edges for drainage).

Homestead kitchen items
Cast iron cookware is a great investment; the pots and pans can last for generations with proper care. Many local hardware stores carry a small selection, or you might order from Lehman's or from Amazon.
Egg basket
This cute egg basket would be fun to use when gathering eggs in the chicken coop, as well as look nice on the kitchen counter. This one holds 24 eggs.
For a goat lover
Even though I'm not a coffee drinker, I have several special coffee mugs that were gifts from friends. I think of the giver each time I have a cup of cocoa or hot homemade broth or soup. A thoughtfully-chosen coffee mug might be a nice gift.
For the soapmaker
For someone who wants to try soapmaking, an immersion blender will make the process a lot easier. Trust me on this; I made my first batches without one. Mine has held up to more than ten years of use.
While you can use just about any sturdy container as a mold, if you're going to make soap regularly you might want a silicon mold so your soap is easy to remove and looks great. I have two of these silicon loaf molds and one of these heavy duty soap molds.
For more information on soap making see my series on making goat milk soap.
Bird feeder - I love feeding the birds in our yard year-round. I have two squirrel-proof (and blue jay proof) bird feeders similar to this one. Ours are pole-mounted, but this model comes with a hanger too. There seem to be a thousand different models and sizes at hardware stores, big box stores, and Amazon.
I fill mine with chicken scratch feed and have the most popular feeders in the neighborhood. I suspect we're probably the only ones in the neighborhood that feed the birds.
A weather station - whether you live in the country or on a suburban homestead, it's helpful to know what the high and low temperatures have been for the day and how much rain you've had. We have one similar to this weather station from Amazon.
A weather radio - this crank-powered radio has a built-in flashlight and a power bank for a cell phone.
I'd love to know which suggestions you think would be the perfect gift for your special homestead woman (especially if that woman is you). Let me know in the comments.

Great list Kathi :)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Sandra. :-)
DeleteLove it, I was thinking of doing a similar idea myself...hadnt thought of a few of these, good work!
ReplyDeleteThank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
DeleteYou have some great ideas there! I laugh at myself for requesting practical useful gifts (like a clothesline) but I guess I'm not the only one. Maybe it's a quality of homestead women in general? I like the embedded seed card idea, and the lotion bars. Those sound like something I could try making.
ReplyDeleteI think you're right, Michelle. Homesteading women are practical... but chocolate is nice too. :-)
DeleteGreat list! I LOVE the embedded seed idea! I would be happy receiving any of these gifts!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Elizabeth. I hope you find one or more of these under the tree this year. :-)
DeleteOh my goodness, this is going to make my shopping for Christmas so much easier this year. No one in my family is exactly a homesteader quite yet, but some of these gifts can still make their hobbies much easier to manage. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad it was helpful, Kayla.
DeleteI really love making homemade beauty, health and household recipes for giftgiving. This year, I'm giving essential oils and books full of recipes for my two daughters to try making their own, as well as the homemade versions. One daughter likes to be pampered, the other will make her own. I love the rubber tub idea! I'm looking for square ones that can double as a washboard clothes washer.
ReplyDeleteCarol L
What a great gift for your daughters, Carol. I hope you can find the type of tubs you're looking for. We "inherited" two square metal washtubs when we moved here, but both had holes in them so I use them as plant containers. Thank you for commenting!
DeleteI like the idea of a lotion bar, and it doesn't look too hard to make! Cast iron is always great. Thank for sharing these great ideas on the Waste Less Wednesday Blog Hop.
ReplyDeleteLotion bars are super easy to make, Katy!
